Alumni Give Back Through New Career Program Initiative

Spring 2017 | New York

This past December, Posse New York’s Career Program launched a new initiative, Alums in Action. Posse Scholars were paired with Posse alumni, whom they shadowed in their professional offices.

The inaugural program featured alumni working in a wide variety of organizations, including the Legal Aid Society, Nielsen, The International Academy of Hope, Atlas DIY and Bloomberg Philanthropies. The experience exposed Scholars to a real-life perspective on professional opportunities in these diverse industries.

“Though I knew about Nielsen, shadowing a Posse alumna allowed me to understand how vast the opportunities at one company can be,” says Quinn Hurse, a junior at Wheaton College. “I saw analytical, technical and creative roles all in one place. I also enjoyed seeing a Posse alumna in her element, speaking about her role with confidence and expertise. As a college student, sometimes getting to that point seems impossible, but now I know it is within reach.”

Now I know it is within reach.

Each shadow session was structured to include an engaging activity and an interactive tour of the office or a panel discussion. At Legal Aid Society Scholars participated in “Know Your Rights” Jeopardy followed by a panel discussion with staff members representing various positions.

“The Alums in Action program was a life-changing experience, as it inspired me to take a risk and explore a different sector of the business and finance industry,” said Christine Lim, a junior at Vanderbilt University who visited Bloomberg. “Ultimately, I discovered that Bloomberg was the perfect culture fit for me, and I am excited to say that I will be interning there this summer.”

Alums in Action will continue to be a valuable initiative among Posse’s many Career Program offerings. The Career Program provides Scholars with career-readiness workshops, internships, resume coaching, assistance applying for fellowships and graduate-level programs, and all levels of professional support for Posse alumni after graduation.
