Governor Baker Welcomes New Scholars from Boston

Spring 2016 | Boston

The Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel could barely contain the excitement of 60 high school students as they officially became Posse Scholars before an audience of friends, family, and Posse supporters at the 2016 Awards Ceremony. Honored guests Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, former First Lady of Massachusetts and Ropes & Gray Co-Managing Partner Diane Patrick, and Posse President and Founder Deborah Bial welcomed the new class of Scholars to the Posse community.

Governor Baker reflected on his own college experience and praised Posse for its role in creating community for students. Diane Patrick also lauded the program while recognizing the outstanding achievements of several Scholars.

Bucknell University Scholar Messeret Kebede spoke about how her confidence and sense of self grew through Posse’s belief in her potential. Messeret, a junior majoring in managing and sustainability, recently returned from a semester abroad in Spain and is currently studying abroad through the Bucknell in Ghana program.

Pride and gratitude were the overwhelming feelings of the evening as new Scholars and their parents took the opportunity to address the audience.

“I am so proud of my son,” said one mother. “Now he has nine brothers and sisters to grow with.”

Putnam Investments supported the event as a lead sponsor for the ninth consecutive year. A reception before the ceremony highlighted the company’s steadfast commitment to Posse Scholars with remarks from Stephen Denny, Putnam’s director of human resources in diversity and inclusion.
