Immersion Program Prepares STEM Scholars for Success

As a part of Pre-Collegiate Training, Scholars selected for the Posse STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Program at Bryn Mawr College participate in a unique immersion program before they matriculate. The intensive two-week program, which takes place on Bryn Mawr’s campus, gives Scholars the opportunity to enhance their STEM knowledge through lectures, labs and field trips.

“It’s a packed two weeks of academics and advising, which allows the Scholars to explore STEM and college life at Bryn Mawr, and provides the faculty and staff with a glimpse of their potential to learn and lead,” said Peter Brodfeuhrer, a professor of biology at Bryn Mawr.

This summer, the third Bryn Mawr College STEM Posse’s immersion program included molecular biology and neuroscience lectures and labs as well as a workshop with Bryn Mawr President Kim Cassidy. Scholars also took a field trip to nearby Philadelphia, where they were given a tour of the city’s premiere science museum, the Franklin Institute.

“The STEM immersion showed me how the Bryn Mawr science program is set up,” says Bryn Mawr Scholar Yeidaly Mejia, who began her first year this fall. “The classes are rigorous and I learned that faculty are extremely supportive. Honestly, I just feel like Posse’s really prepared me.”

Bryn Mawr has been a Posse Boston partner for 15 years. To date, the college has selected 12 traditional Posses and three STEM Posses from Boston in addition to three traditional Posses from Houston.
